Guys, I thought I'd run something by you (and the mods) that I've been thinking of for a while before I jump in and make an ass of myself.

A while ago inspired by a similar contest on a Velvet Underground forum I started running a little fun poll-based competition on U2 songs. Basically, it was a knockout tournament similar to, say, Wimbeledon with preliminary rounds, 1st 2nd and Quarters etc. Song would be pitched against a song (at random) in a poll and after X number of days the poll closed and the winner would go through. So, say in the semis the 'Bad' could come up against 'One' and you'd have to decide.

Now, the last time I tried to do this on my favourite music forum I got real stick for it. Not everyone there was a U2 fan and given that I started with a preliminary round (mostly B-sides and non LP tracks) people quickly objected on the basis that this could go on & on for weeks and it would clutter up the forum. Plus I should have opened it up to discuss the merits of each track in each poll thread rather than just use them to vote. After 7 matches, I was asked politely to drop it or be dropped. Looking back, I think they were right: I was too green & too keen and that's what really bugged people.

Anyway, 5 years on I stumble on the old database I set up for this and I think 'Dang! That would really have been fun had I finished it'. Now I have quite a bit of free time with the wife over there now and this might keep me out of mischief, I'm thinking about doing it again. Here.

Of course this time I'm asking permission to do this, especially from the mods. It will be songs based (so live B-sides of existing studio material wouldn't count) and will involve a lot of work given the size of the canon, but I'm game. But if you think its a bad idea, say so and you'll never hear of it again.

So, what do you think?

I'm sure you'll have noticed that there's not a lot going on here at the moment so I would welcome some action!  I can feel that breath of fresh air sweeping past me now....

Where is everyone??

Sounds good to me! We could use a little "clutter". ;)  But MV's view is the important one, of course.

Thanks for the positive comments! You guys rock!  ;)

I still will wait on MV's reponse as I want to do this with permission. The preliminary round will be, I think, 13 or so poll threads. I was wondering if a sub-section within Games could avoid flooding the main section?

Hey, I'm all for anything that keeps people interested in coming back here (well... anything that doesn't breach our Terms of Service!  ;) ).

How many possible choices would be required per poll, jimjim? At the moment, it's only possible to have 10 questions per poll, and 10 choices per question.  Also, admins are the only ones who can close topics (either manually, or automatically by way of a pre-configured close-off time). Would you able to achieve your aim with these limitations, jimjim?

To answer Q1, just 2 per poll. It literally would be song v song. Question 2 - I can take a note of the time and take the result at the time and announce it. However if there's a draw, I can use any votes after the deadline in a play off!

This is great stuff. Right....here I go! I'll write the rules and create the draw. There will a prelim round as - so far - the canon stands at 210 songs. I'm 99% there won't be anymore than that.

Catch y'all later!

I once did something similar on the message board for another band. I ran a "Survivor" style vote, so you voted for your least favourite song in each album. The two with the most votes would go and then the next round for the remainder. Once we had a winner for each album we then pit them against each other to get the ultimate song. The threads under each poll where 50% discussion of the songs and merits and 50% vitriol aimed at me ;)

Maybe a year or so after this we can run a U2 survivor?
