This is the album's slow-burner.

The more I listen to it the more I am getting into it, definitely one of NLOTH's highpoints as far as I'm concerned.

I'm astonished by Bono's vocals, who knew the man was a soul singer! Just listen to him belting out the opening lines:

I tied myself with wire
To let the horses run free
Playing with the fire until the fire played with me
The stone was semi-precious
We were barely conscious

And come on, who else other than U2 could turn a visit to ATM machine into a spiritual experience?

I was punching in the numbers at the ATM machine
I could see in the reflection
A face staring back at me

On a personal note and talking of spirituality I have admit the (lapsed) Catholic in me loves the lines:

I was speeding on the subway
Through the Stations Of The Cross

I'm not sure that the young church-going Lovegod ever thought he'd hear the Stations Of The Cross referenced in a rock song!

Bono has been quoted as saying Moment Of Surrender the best song the band has ever written and whilst I'm not in total agreement I do think it's up there with some of the band's best work. The sinewy pulsing beat, the gospel hand claps, a Roxy Music style Edge solo (no doubt inspired by co-producer and former Roxy music band member Brian Eno) all on a song that comes in at just under seven and a half minutes!

Seriously, who could ask for more?

Funny about the Eno influence,  'Unknown caller' for some reason really makes me think  Brian Eno...anyone else agree?

Emma you naughty girl!

We're supposed to be discussing one song a day!

Stick to the topic of Moment of Surrender or Lovegod will have to come up to Rotorua and spank you :) You'll get your chance to talk about Unknown Caller!

Good things come to those who wait

Been out all day and have only had a chance for a few more listens. I am defintely getting into it more. If you were sitting back with a glass of wine or in your case LG a glass of beer with the sterio up loud I think this song would sound amazing instead of sitting here at the computer with my son's iPod headphones... not quite the same thing. I don't as yet have an iPod so I have to use the computer with its crappy speakers.

I went for  a nice long walk today and had just no line on the mp3 player and it was stuck on shuffle for some reason. I don't have the musical knowledge to say what influenced this song but it did stand out as a good one for me.

And yes LG I did pick up the stations of the Cross line too - but no Catholic background for me here

Isn't this the one they recorded all in one hit? It's magic. I woke up with it playing in my head this morning. I'm going to have to learn the lyrics because I keep wanting to sing it.

Still don't understand where the 7 minutes go when I listen to this track.

And yes, Wendynz - "Turn it up loud, Captain!"

I am loving this song!
That's my favourite verse right here.

I was speeding on the subway
Through the stations of the cross
Every eye looking every other way
Counting down ’til the pentecost

WHat do you think he means by:
I tied myself with wire
to let the horses run free

It's really puzzling me.

I think Bono's vocals on this track are stunning. Love the chorus, with all the backup vocals. ANd quite like the lyrics: I did not notice passersby and they did not notice me. A reference to the story of the good Samaritan perhaps.

By way of background, I haven't yet been able to listen to the whole album right through undisturbed...... :halo: :banghead:

However, it does strike me (from what listening I've been able to do) that there are some of U2's more overt, for those who can spot them (more of those fish in the sand bits) spiritual references to be found anywhere, and Moment of Surrender is among the most spiritual of these.

To me the term "Moment Of Surrender" refers to the moment of submission to God's will-in this moment all other concerns are swept aside ,and peripheral vision don't exist-you wouldn't notice passers-by

Sorry to get all spiritual on ya, but it is Sunday...........

Oh yes, another one for the U2 church service.

The only thing that grates me is that "dunk" noise, I thought it was a download fault at first, it starts the song off then continues throughout, but otherwise I love the bass line and can't believe that I've sat through nearly 7 1/2 minutes, I'm lost in the song and the emotion.

To me the song is about realisation - being caught up in the whole stress/work/money/life merry-go-round, falling for the commercialism of everything (wedding day?) - stop the world I want to get off senario, whether you just "get it" - the moment of surrender - and want to go back to something more simple "find yourself" or you "find God".

This is a stand out for me on an outstanding album 7 and 1/2 minutes and I just want it to never end.  To me this track is right up there with Miss Sarajevo and One after only a few plays thru. If the played this live with Miss Sarajevo or One it could take me some time to recover if/when I am there
