I would now say that I'm still not convinced re: horses = heroin, in the song, but acknowledge
there are inferences, with-respect-to Bono's interview, that drugs play a part in the decline of
the character. But he's a veteran soldier, not a drug addict per-se. Driving yourself and partner
to drink and drugs does not necessarily imply addiction. In any case, I think the main theme in
the song is still that idea of surrendering to love - whatever that may be.

Of course, my comments still stand regarding the ambiguity of lyrics and interpreting them as you see fit
