While listening to NLOTH there have been several occasions where I've thought "that guitar riff sounds very familiar" or "hasn't Bono used a similar lyric before?" I'm starting to wonder if U2 has so much material in their back catalogue they're starting to inadvertently repeat themselves. The most striking example I've noticed is on Stand Up Comedy, from 2:25 - 2:46. Am I the only one who is immediately reminded of the chorus from Holy Joe (b-side to Discotheque)?
That aside, I'm loving the new album. My favourite track is FEZ-Being Born, followed by Magnificent. I've had a tough time coming to accept Get On Your Boots. It really doesn't do anything for me and I wish they'd chosen something else as the first single. The live performances of Boots have all seemed pretty lack lustre from a vocal standpoint. I think the studio version has four of them singing the chorus (Bono, The Edge, Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno). Bono and The Edge struggle to pull it off by themselves.
The live performance of Magnificent on Letterman totally blew me away though. The Edge is like a one man band the way he drives that song.
The following YouTube clip has the best sound quality of any I've found:
BTW, the topic title is an old quote from Bono talking about the ATYCLB album.
"This tank has no reverse gear"
